Nepal Election Commission Fines Two Candidates and One Party for Code of Conduct Violations
The Nepal Election Commission has fined two candidates and one political party Rs 25,000 each for violating the election code of conduct, citing unsatisfactory clarifications.
Kathmandu — The Election Commission of Nepal has fined two election candidates and one political party for violating the election code of conduct.
The Commission’s Central Election Code of Conduct and Monitoring Committee imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on CPN candidate Shakti Bahadur Basnet, independent candidate Dr. Nicholas Bhusal, and the political party Shram Shakti.
Election Commissioner Sagun Shumsher Jabara said the decision was made after the explanations sought by the Commission were found to be unsatisfactory. He said violations of the election code of conduct are being treated seriously and that action will be taken against anyone found breaching the rules based on evidence.
The Election Commission has also issued warnings to two employees. In addition, it directed the concerned authority to immediately reinstate an employee of a public institution who had been dismissed in connection with a code of conduct matter.
Nearly 300 Candidates Asked for Clarification Nationwide
As part of its nationwide monitoring of election conduct, the Commission has sought clarifications from nearly 300 candidates over alleged violations. At the central level, explanations were requested from 82 candidates, of whom 57 have submitted their responses. The Commission sought further clarification from six candidates after finding their initial responses unsatisfactory.
More than 300 complaints have been registered with the Commission across the country, and investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has formally written to the Press Council Nepal regarding alleged violations of the election code of conduct by media houses and journalists.
It has indicated that if the Council fails to take effective action, the Commission will initiate legal procedures independently. The Commission reiterated its commitment to strictly enforcing the election code of conduct to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process in Nepal.
