The Gen Z Movement Alliance has demanded the immediate publication of the investigation report prepared by the Gauri Bahadur Karki-led commission regarding the state response and fatalities during the protests held on Bhadra 23 and 24.
A delegation from the Alliance on Thursday submitted a memorandum at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, urging the government to make the findings public without further delay and to initiate legal action against those found responsible.
Demand to Release Commission Report Before Election
The Alliance stated that the Bhadra protests, organized against corruption and in defense of freedom of expression, resulted in 76 deaths and more than 2,213 injuries. The group accused the government of failing to ensure justice for the victims and their families months after the incidents.
Although the Alliance said it initially trusted the interim citizen-led government headed by a former chief justice to ensure accountability, it expressed concern over repeated extensions of the commission’s tenure. The memorandum describes the delay in publishing the report as suspicious, particularly with the House of Representatives by-election scheduled for Falgun 21 approaching.
Warning Over Justice and Electoral Credibility
The Alliance has called for the report to be released before the election and for legal proceedings to begin against those responsible. It warned that postponing publication until after the election could create public doubt and raise concerns that the report may be sidelined like previous commission findings.
In the memorandum, the Alliance stated that failure to publish and implement the report in a timely manner would amount to a betrayal of the public movement. It also cautioned that if justice is not delivered to the families of those killed and injured, questions could arise regarding the credibility and moral basis of the electoral process.
The government has not issued an official response to the memorandum.
