Gyanendra Shah has stated that Nepal should resolve its existing national problems before proceeding with the upcoming elections. In a video message released on Wednesday on the occasion of the 74th National Democracy Day, Shah said that although periodic elections are a natural process in a democratic system for selecting representatives, the seriousness of the country’s current situation must be carefully considered.
He said there is a prevailing public sentiment that national issues should be addressed first before moving toward the imminent electoral process. According to him, understanding the gravity of the present circumstances is essential at this time.
Shah further argued that elections should be conducted only after building national consensus and creating an inclusive understanding among all stakeholders. He said such preparation would help prevent conflict, unrest, and political tensions following the polls.
He maintained that proceeding with elections after ensuring broader agreement and unity would place the country on the correct path. National Democracy Day is observed annually in Nepal to mark the establishment of democracy and remains a significant date in the country’s political history.
