RSP Nawalparasi Chairperson Mahendra Singh Thakuri Resigns, Joins Nepali Congress Ahead of By-Election
Mahendra Singh Thakuri has stepped down as RSP’s Nawalparasi chairperson and joined the Nepali Congress ahead of the by-election in Nawalparasi Constituency No. 1.
Mahendra Singh Thakuri, chairperson of the Nawalparasi district committee of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has resigned from the party and joined the Nepali Congress ahead of the upcoming by-election in Nawalparasi Constituency No. 1.
Thakuri was formally welcomed into the Nepali Congress by party Vice-President Vishwaprakash Sharma during an election gathering held in Chaupata, Bardaghat, on Thursday. Thakuri had contested the 2022 House of Representatives election (2079 BS) from Nawalparasi-1 as an RSP candidate. He secured 12,499 votes and finished third.
In that election, Nepali Congress candidate Binod Chaudhary won the seat with 29,519 votes. Hridayesh Tripathi, who contested with the support of CPN-UML under the “spade” election symbol, received 22,328 votes.
A by-election in the constituency is scheduled for Falgun 21 (early March, according to the Nepali calendar). The RSP has nominated Bikram Khanal as its candidate for the upcoming poll.
Khanal had previously joined the RSP after leaving the Nepali Congress. Thakuri had expressed dissatisfaction following the party’s decision to field Khanal, prior to his resignation from the RSP.
