Gagan Thapa Announces Anti-Corruption Commission, Calls Next Five Years Crucial for Nepali Congress

Gagan Thapa, president of the Nepali Congress, has said the year 2082 BS marks the beginning of a decisive five-year period for the party, pledging that Congress will remain fully active and committed to good governance.

Speaking at an election rally in Surkhet on Thursday, Thapa said the public should not have to hear allegations of corruption during a five-year Congress-led government. He stated that ensuring transparency and accountability would be a central priority.

Thapa also announced plans to form a commission to investigate corruption cases dating back to 2046 BS, adding that the recommendations made by the commission would be implemented. “If even a member of my own family is found involved, action will be taken,” he said, emphasizing his commitment as party president.

He further expressed readiness for a public policy debate with other political parties on their agendas for the next five years. Thapa invited the CPN-UML, the Maoist party, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party to share a common platform and present their respective visions for Nepal.

Thapa criticized political narratives that focus solely on blaming previous governments, arguing that voters deserve clear plans and measurable commitments. He also questioned leaders who, according to him, were absent during periods of conflict but now claim they can transform the country within five years, urging voters in Karnali to assess such promises carefully.

The remarks come as political campaigning intensifies, with governance reform and anti-corruption measures emerging as key electoral issues.
