Young Leader Ramji Yadav Becomes Labour Minister, Signals Shift in Nepal Politics

Balen Shah’s cabinet reshuffle elevates a young lawmaker, signaling a sharp shift in Madhesh political dynamics and labour policy direction

Ramji Yadav has been appointed Nepal’s new Labour Minister following a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Balen Shah, a move that signals a generational and political shift in the country’s labour leadership. The decision matters as it places a young, first-time lawmaker at the center of a ministry critical to employment and migration policy.

The appointment came after the dismissal of former labour minister Deepak Sah, with Yadav stepping into a role that directly impacts millions of Nepali workers at home and abroad.

Young Lawmaker Emerges From Electoral Upset

Yadav, 30, was elected to the House of Representatives from Saptari District–2 under the banner of the Rastriya Swatantra Party. His victory was widely seen as an upset in a region long dominated by Madhesh-based parties.

He secured 28,404 votes, defeating Umesh Kumar Yadav of the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, while CK Raut of the Janamat Party finished third. The result marked a significant disruption in traditional voting patterns, bringing Yadav into national focus.

Political Journey Across Multiple Parties

Despite his current affiliation, Yadav’s political roots lie in Madhesh-centric movements. He began his career in 2017 with the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal, joining as a young member at just 22.

He later moved to the Janata Samajbadi Party and subsequently to the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal, reflecting a trajectory shaped by shifting alliances in regional politics.

Before joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party, he was associated with the Rastriya Mukti Party as a central committee member, switching parties shortly before the 2020 elections.

Background Blends Politics and Engineering

Born in Rajbiraj into a Maithil Yadav family, Yadav holds a degree in engineering from Kathmandu Engineering College, graduating in 2017. Alongside politics, he has worked in engineering consultancy.

His personal ties also intersect with local governance. He is married to Kajal Yadav, daughter of former Rajbiraj mayor Shambhu Prasad Yadav, and previously worked within the mayor’s secretariat.

Labour Ministry Faces High Expectations

Yadav’s appointment comes at a time when Nepal’s labour sector faces mounting challenges, including foreign employment fraud, worker exploitation, and domestic job scarcity.

Speaking to media after his appointment, Yadav said he has been entrusted with the responsibility of building not just Madhesh but the entire nation, pledging to carry out his duties with integrity.

Political Signals Behind the Appointment

The decision by Prime Minister Balen Shah to appoint a young and relatively new political figure is being viewed as a calculated shift toward fresh leadership and voter appeal. It also reflects the growing influence of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, which has been positioning itself as a reform-oriented force in Nepal’s evolving political landscape.

As Yadav takes charge, attention will now turn to whether his rise translates into tangible reforms in one of Nepal’s most sensitive and impactful ministries.
