Chairperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), KP Sharma Oli, has accused the government of deliberately subjecting him to humiliation.
Speaking at a party program held at the UML central office in Chyasal on Saturday, Oli said he was treated in a degrading manner at the airport while returning to Kathmandu from his home district of Jhapa on Friday.
According to Oli, the behavior he faced during the security check was unusual and disrespectful. He said that while he had been treated normally when departing for Jhapa, the situation changed dramatically upon his return.
“When I went from here to Jhapa earlier, the airport staff treated me properly,” Oli said. “But yesterday, when I returned, I was checked as if I were a gold smuggler. I was unnecessarily harassed. When I asked why this was happening, I was told that orders had come from above.”
Oli noted that even during foreign travel, he is often treated with respect in countries where officials recognize him, and that such degrading treatment is usually faced by Nepalis only in unfamiliar places. He said experiencing similar behavior at Nepal’s own airport was deeply troubling.
Questions Raised Over Government Conduct and Political Culture
He added that he did not take the incident personally in a major way, as he has spent his life struggling for the dignity and sovereignty of the country. However, he questioned the mindset and intentions of the current government.
“What kind of attitude does the government have? Is it trying to insult political leaders?” Oli asked. “What happened yesterday shows that we may not be living in a civilized society. This is not the conduct of a responsible government. It is an uncivilized and non-political government.”
He stressed that such practices must be corrected and that Nepal must be brought back toward a civilized and cultured political environment. According to him, the public will deliver its verdict on these issues through elections.
Concluding his remarks, Oli said that there is no alternative to the UML forming the government if the country is to be steered back onto the right path.
