Kathmandu — The main opposition party, CPN-UML, staged a street protest in Kathmandu on Saturday following the arrest of its chairman, K. P. Sharma Oli.
Leaders and supporters gathered in the Chabahil area under the coordination of the party’s Kathmandu District Committee, expressing opposition to the arrest and describing it as politically motivated.
District committee chairman Dipak Niraula said the action against the party leadership amounted to political retaliation, adding that the party was compelled to respond through public demonstration.
The committee had earlier instructed party members to assemble at Chabahil Chowk at 9:00 am. Party cadres subsequently gathered at the site, chanting slogans and staging a protest. Demonstrators called for an end to what they described as political vendetta and demanded equal enforcement of the law.
According to party officials, the arrest is linked to the implementation of a probe commission’s report on incidents that occurred on Bhadra 23 and 24. The party maintains that the action is targeted rather than impartial.
The protest reflects rising political tensions, with the party indicating that further demonstrations may follow.
