Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma on Monday urged political parties to avoid making unrealistic promises during election campaigns, warning that exaggerated commitments aimed at winning votes could create long-term public frustration.
Speaking at a public gathering in Lamjung, Sharma emphasized that election campaigns should remain responsible, policy-focused, and respectful. He said political competition must be centered on ideas, programs, and vision rather than personal attacks.
Calls for Civil Political Culture
Sharma stated that healthy criticism is a natural part of democracy but said mutual insults weaken political culture. He urged leaders and candidates to communicate with voters through constructive dialogue instead of negative rhetoric.
He cautioned that making impractical assurances through speeches and election manifestos may damage public trust if those commitments cannot be fulfilled.
Proposal to Limit Executive Tenure
During his address, Sharma said the Nepali Congress has adopted a policy aimed at reforming traditional governance practices. He stated that the party plans to advocate for constitutional provisions to limit executive tenure.
Under the proposed framework, no individual would be allowed to serve as Prime Minister or Chief Minister more than two terms. Sharma said the measure is intended to prevent prolonged control of executive power by any single individual.
He added that in Nepal’s evolving political environment, the Nepali Congress is committed to improving governance practices, policymaking standards, and leadership systems.
