Army Chief Confers Major General Rank on Two Officers, Signals Leadership Shift

Padam Bahadur Budha and Pawan Khatri elevated to Major General, taking on key strategic roles

The Nepal Army has promoted Padam Bahadur Budha and Pawan Khatri to the rank of Major General, marking a significant shift in the force’s senior leadership structure. The move signals a redistribution of command responsibilities at a critical level within the military.

Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel conferred the new ranks during a special ceremony held at the Army Headquarters on Friday.

Leadership Reshuffle Strengthens Command Structure

The promotions were made in line with a government decision taken on April 5, elevating both officers from Assistant Rathi to the rank of Upa-Rathi (Major General). With their new roles, the officers are expected to take on key strategic and administrative responsibilities across important military divisions, strengthening operational command.

Senior Officials Attend Promotion Ceremony

The ceremony was attended by senior army officials, including high-ranking generals and other military leaders, underscoring the institutional importance of the promotions. Such advancements are a routine part of military administration but are also seen as critical in injecting fresh leadership at the top levels.

Promotions Expected to Impact Military Operations

Analysts say the elevation of new Major Generals can influence long-term planning, national security strategy, and internal military coordination. As they assume office, both officers are expected to play a crucial role in shaping Nepal Army’s operational readiness and strategic direction.
