Kathmandu — CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai has accused some senior leaders within the party of spreading misinformation and making hate-filled remarks against him, warning that such actions could harm party unity.
Bhattarai made the remarks through a statement posted on social media as debates intensified within the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) following the party’s defeat in the recent House of Representatives election.
Internal Criticism Emerges After Election Defeat
Since the election results were announced, leaders within the CPN-UML have increasingly begun criticizing one another while discussing the reasons behind the party’s electoral setback.
Leaders associated with the faction outside the party establishment have argued that the leadership should take moral responsibility for the defeat. Meanwhile, leaders close to party chair KP Sharma Oli have defended the leadership’s role.
Bhattarai Urges Restraint During Oli’s Mourning Period
In his Facebook statement, Bhattarai expressed concern about the growing trend of negative remarks and accusations among party leaders. He noted that party chair KP Sharma Oli is currently in mourning following the death of his father and said it is inappropriate to make hostile comments at such a sensitive time.
According to Bhattarai, Oli did not chair the recent party secretariat meeting because he is in mourning. The meeting was instead chaired by Vice Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa. Bhattarai said this period is a time of grief not only for the party leadership but also for party members.
Allegations of Fake Accounts Spreading False Information
Bhattarai stated that baseless accusations, hateful comments, and misinformation are being circulated about him and some other party leaders. He also said fake Facebook accounts have been actively used to spread such content.
Bhattarai emphasized that protecting party unity, transforming the party in a multidimensional way, and rebuilding public trust are currently the most important responsibilities for the CPN-UML.
He said discussions on party issues should take place at the appropriate time through established procedures and should be based on facts and reasoned arguments. Bhattarai concluded by saying that instead of self-condemnation, the party should conduct a serious internal review and move forward with a clear direction.
