Senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balen Shah, has pledged to preserve Karnali Province’s historical civilization, natural resources and cultural heritage, stating that development efforts must move forward alongside protection of identity.
Emphasis on Understanding Karnali’s Depth and Potential
Speaking at the RSP manifesto unveiling program in Surkhet, Shah described Karnali as a region defined not only by its vast geography but also by deep historical and cultural roots. He said the province’s full significance has not been adequately understood by past governments and political parties.
“Karnali, which includes the country’s largest district, major rivers, extensive rural municipalities and deep lakes, has not been fully understood in terms of its depth and potential,” Shah said. “We want to understand that depth.”
Focus on Natural Resources and Market Access
Shah highlighted Rara Lake as a significant natural asset of the province. He also referred to high-value products such as yarsagumba, apples and Marsi rice, stating that these local goods have not reached national markets at the level they should. According to him, expanding market access across Nepal is necessary to ensure fair value for Karnali’s production.
“Products grown in Karnali should reach the entire country,” he said, emphasizing the need to connect local output with broader distribution networks.
Commitment to Cultural Preservation and Structural Development
He also underscored the historical importance of Sinja Valley, recognized as the origin of the Nepali Khas language. Shah noted that the region’s language, script, arts, music and festivals collectively form a distinct civilization that should be safeguarded.
“Protecting civilization is not only about preserving the past but also about securing the future,” he said. During his remarks, Shah accused previous political leadership of focusing on Karnali’s hunger, poverty, maternal mortality and hardship without delivering long-term structural solutions.
He said future efforts should prioritize tourism development, agricultural growth and local enterprise expansion. “Karnali’s aspirations are now our aspirations,” Shah said. “We want to move forward carrying the dreams of this region.”
