Kathmandu, Nepal — Nepal’s Election Commission has intensified security preparations ahead of the upcoming elections, focusing on maintaining a peaceful, free and orderly voting process following recent incidents of unrest in parts of the country.
A high-level meeting chaired by Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari was held to review the national security situation. The meeting was attended by the Home Secretary and the chiefs of Nepal’s four security agencies. Officials conducted a comprehensive assessment of security conditions across the country and discussed additional measures to address emerging challenges.
Security Review Focuses on Rautahat and Birgunj
Particular concern was raised over recent tensions in Rautahat and Birgunj in Madhes Province. In Rautahat, disputes between different groups escalated into violence, while in Birgunj, protests and stone-pelting incidents led to heightened tensions. Authorities assessed that such developments could potentially disrupt the election environment.
According to Election Commission sources, the incidents may create fear among voters. As a result, officials are reassessing the classification of sensitive areas. Some locations may be designated as “highly sensitive,” with plans to deploy additional security personnel if necessary.
Enhanced Monitoring and Border Vigilance Planned
Security agencies are expected to receive instructions to respond swiftly to local disputes and maintain strict vigilance against activities that could undermine the electoral process. The meeting also emphasized increased alertness in border districts and areas where clashes have occurred.
In addition, authorities discussed strengthening monitoring mechanisms to counter the spread of misleading information through social media platforms, recognizing its potential impact on public order and voter confidence.
With the election date approaching, the Election Commission stressed the importance of coordination among security forces, administrative authorities and election bodies to ensure a secure environment for voters.
The Commission called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and respect democratic norms, reaffirming its commitment to conducting the elections in a peaceful and credible manner.
