Man Climbs Telecom Tower, Demands Marriage to Girlfriend

A 24-year-old man who climbed an 80-metre Nepal Telecom tower in Malangwa demanding that he be allowed to marry his girlfriend was brought down safely on Sunday after security personnel and his family spent hours talking him out of jumping.

Afsar Alam Husein of Bakainiya, Godaita Municipality-9, had reached the tower inside the Nepal Telecom office compound at Malangwa Municipality-9 before dawn. Police believe he may have climbed it during the night.

At around 4 am, Husein called a friend and told him that he was on top of the tower. The information was then passed to police.

Marriage demand turns into a tense rescue

When security personnel reached the site, Husein demanded that his girlfriend be brought there and that he be allowed to marry her. He warned that he would jump if the demand was not met.

A joint team from Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the Nepali Army was mobilised. The operation, however, depended more on conversation and family intervention than force.

Police called Husein’s father and elder brother to the site and arranged for them to speak with him by telephone. Security personnel also remained in contact with him, trying to keep him calm and persuade him to come down.

The response avoided turning a personal crisis into a confrontation. With Husein positioned high above the compound and threatening to jump, rescuers focused on maintaining communication while his family appealed to him directly.

After sustained counselling by family members and security personnel, Husein agreed to descend from the tower.

Sarlahi Police spokesperson DSP Ved Prasad Gautam said he was brought down safely without suffering any injury.

Police examining events behind the incident

Preliminary information shows that Husein is studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Sarlahi Campus.

He is understood to have been in a relationship with a woman studying at the same campus. Police have not disclosed further details about her or the circumstances surrounding the relationship.

Investigators are now looking into what led Husein to climb the tower and what happened before the incident.
