Former Nepal prime minister KP Sharma Oli is undergoing gallbladder surgery in Kathmandu after doctors detected a significant stone, highlighting fresh concerns over his health. The development carries political weight as the senior leader remains central to Nepal’s opposition landscape.
The procedure began at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where hospital officials confirmed he had been moved to the operation theatre late.
Surgery Underway Amid Health Complications
Hospital director Dr. Subash Acharya said Oli had been taken in for surgery, with a formal statement expected after the operation concludes.
According to medical sources, a surgical team led by Dr. Paleswan Joshi Lakhe is removing a 22mm gallstone from Oli’s gallbladder. Such cases typically require immediate intervention to prevent further complications, including infection or blockage.
Recent Arrest Adds to Health Strain
Oli had been admitted to the hospital shortly after his arrest on March 28 from his residence in Bhaktapur’s Gundu area. Authorities detained him following recommendations from an investigative report linked to the Gen-Z movement probe.
Officials confirmed that health issues surfaced the same day, prompting his transfer to the hospital for close monitoring and treatment.
Political Implications Begin to Surface
The timing of Oli’s surgery has drawn attention across political circles, with supporters and critics closely watching updates on his condition. As chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), Oli remains a key figure in Nepal’s political dynamics. Any prolonged recovery could influence party strategy and ongoing political developments.
For now, doctors say the immediate focus remains on the success of the procedure, with further updates expected once surgery is completed.
