Kamal Thapa Says Leftist Ideology Has Dominated Nepal Politics, Calls Nepali Congress Left-Oriented

Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa said on Saturday that leftist ideology has long dominated Nepal’s national politics, stating that he views the Nepali Congress as a carrier of left-oriented political thought.

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu, Thapa said that for decades, leftist ideas and political forces have held dominance in the country’s political landscape. He argued that the Nepali Congress has also advanced itself in line with left-oriented ideology.

“In political science, society is also regarded as left-oriented political ideology,” Thapa said. “During this 70-year-long ideological journey, from radical communism to democratic socialism, leftist thought has remained dominant. I consider the Nepali Congress as a carrier of leftist ideology and forces.”

Thapa also highlighted what he described as a contradiction between Nepal’s cultural foundations and its political direction. He said the Nepali people are rooted in Sanatan religion, culture, and traditions inspired by Vedic values that have existed since ancient times.

“Values and traditions from the Vedic era have deeply rooted themselves in Nepali society,” he said. “Ancient Vedic values and traditions form the distinctive character of Nepali society. However, politically, communism, Marxism, and socialism — which hold opposing principles — have led and guided our society. That contradiction has troubled me. This unfortunate situation must come to an end.”

Reiterating his longstanding position, Thapa said that the restoration of Nepal as a Hindu state along with the monarchy is essential to move the country in what he described as the right direction.
