Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum Forms Waste Management Committee

Kathmandu — The 13th meeting of the Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum has decided to form a study and coordination committee to promote scientific and sustainable waste management across the Kathmandu Valley.

The meeting was chaired by Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor and Forum Chair Chiribabu Maharjan. Participants agreed that existing waste management methods and technologies require systematic review.

The newly formed committee will study technical approaches and strengthen coordination, facilitation, and collective implementation among local governments within the Valley.

Review of Public Transportation and Urban Mobility Planning

The Forum also agreed to review previously prepared reports related to public transportation sustainability. Based on those findings, local governments will collaborate with the Government of Nepal to develop an appropriate structural framework for public transport operations.

Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol said that future transportation planning must reflect the Kathmandu Valley’s geography, cultural characteristics, and urban settlement patterns.

The meeting further agreed to prepare necessary legal provisions for bicycle lanes stretching from Godawari to Budhanilkantha. A comprehensive master plan will be developed, and infrastructure expansion will proceed in coordination with the federal government.

Commitment to Coordinated Action on Shared Urban Challenges

The Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum reaffirmed its commitment to coordinated action on shared urban issues, including waste management, public transportation, drinking water supply, river conservation, food hygiene, disaster management, and climate change.

Forum members stated that these cross-boundary challenges require collective planning and sustained cooperation among local governments.
