Two brothers were killed in a Patan stabbing incident on Wednesday evening after a wrong-number phone call escalated into a fatal attack, raising serious concerns about public safety in Lalitpur.
Police said the victims, who had gone to resolve a misunderstanding, were attacked with a knife and later declared dead at a hospital.
Dispute Triggered by Wrong Phone Call
According to Lalitpur police, the incident began when a phone call made by one of the Nemwang brothers was accidentally dialed to the wrong number. The call reached Sanjiv Nepali, who works at a local meat shop in Patan.
A verbal argument reportedly broke out during the call. Police said the dispute escalated quickly, leading Nepali to summon the two brothers to Patan. The victims, identified as Sumit Nemwang, 33, and Srijan Nemwang, 26, went to meet him intending to apologize and settle the issue peacefully.
Knife Attack Turns Fatal in Public Square
Lalitpur Police Chief SSP Govindra Bogati said the situation turned violent as soon as the brothers arrived. “As they tried to explain and apologize, the suspect attacked Srijan without listening,” Bogati said. “When Sumit tried to intervene, he was also stabbed.”
The attack occurred in Patan Durbar Square, a busy public area, amplifying concerns about sudden violent crime in crowded urban spaces.
Police Arrest Suspect After Brief Chase
Police teams from Satdobato Circle and Pulchowk Division rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the attack. By the time officers arrived, both brothers were critically injured and lying on the ground. The suspect was seen fleeing with the weapon.
Authorities said the accused attempted to hide inside a nearby restaurant but was apprehended by a female police officer. During the arrest, he allegedly tried to misbehave with the officer.
Victims Declared Dead at Hospital
The injured brothers were immediately taken to B&B Hospital in Gwarko, where doctors pronounced them dead. Police said the victims lived in Imadol, Lalitpur, with their father.
