kathmandu — Unrelenting rainfall over the past two days has caused severe flooding across Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City in western Nepal, submerging entire neighborhoods and leaving hundreds of households affected. Floodwaters entered homes, damaging property and forcing residents to seek refuge elsewhere.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, nearly 202 millimeters of rainfall was recorded at the Dhangadhi Airport station in the past 24 hours. This volume exceeds the danger threshold and has led to extensive waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city.
One of the most severely affected locations is Shikshanagar in Ward No. 8, where floodwaters have entered the majority of houses. Local resident Dinesh Bohara said, “The fridge, cupboards, food stock — everything has been damaged. The losses amount to several lakhs (hundreds of thousands of rupees). Our scooter and motorbike have also been submerged. We’re currently taking shelter at a neighbor’s house.”
Ward No. 12 is facing similar challenges, with the main roads underwater and traffic movement disrupted. Security forces and volunteers are actively involved in rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, flooding has also impacted Krishnapur and Belauri municipalities in neighboring Kanchanpur District. Much of Nepal’s Sudurpaschim Province, especially in the Terai region, is currently waterlogged, while rainfall continues in nearby hilly districts.
In Dhungad, Ward No. 5 of Sigas Rural Municipality in Baitadi District, locals remain on high alert as the Seti River rises rapidly. Swelling river and stream levels have increased the risk of flash floods in riverside communities.
The Sudurpaschim Provincial Police Office reports that while no major casualties have been recorded so far, the situation remains sensitive. Authorities have urged the public to relocate to safe zones and adhere strictly to safety guidelines during this natural disaster.
