Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has said the House of Representatives election must take place on the scheduled date, insisting that polls on Falgun 21 are essential to safeguard democracy.
Koirala made the remarks while meeting local leaders in Ward No. 4 of Sundar Haraicha Municipality in Morang district. During the interaction, he urged party members to focus on election preparations, saying the Nepali Congress is ready to face the polls.
He stressed that elections form the backbone of a democratic system and are the only means to protect the constitution and prevent the country from slipping into prolonged political uncertainty. “We are waiting for the election date, but looking at the government’s preparedness, doubts have emerged over whether the election will be held on time,” Koirala said.
The senior Congress leader also accused the government of failing to create an environment conducive to holding elections. Raising concerns over unresolved security and governance issues, he questioned the government’s intent and readiness.
“Some party leaders are not allowed to travel outside Kathmandu, looted weapons are still at large, and prisoners remain free. What has the government planned regarding these issues?” he asked.
Koirala’s comments have added momentum to the ongoing debate over the timely conduct of elections, while placing pressure on the government to ensure conditions necessary for a credible and orderly poll.
