Kathmandu — Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has described yoga as a vital tool for promoting global peace, harmony, and positive societal change. Referring to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, he stated that practices like yoga, rooted in self-discipline and awareness, could contribute to conflict resolution.
Yoga as a Bridge to Global Understanding
Speaking at a program in Lalitpur on Saturday to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga, Prime Minister Oli said yoga’s relevance extends beyond physical wellness. “At a time when the world is searching for paths to peace and understanding, yoga can serve as a bridge connecting humanity,” he said.
He clarified that yoga is not limited to spiritual beliefs but is a practical discipline that supports daily life. “It is not something related to the afterlife—it is closely connected to this world,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that without observing yoga’s ethical principles—Yama and Niyama—physical postures and breathing exercises have limited societal value. “If our conduct is not pure, then meditation or pranayama alone cannot bring social benefit,” he said. “Without karma yoga and disciplined action, meditation alone is not effective.”
Yoga’s Relevance Amid Global Tensions
Oli also pointed to the growing importance of yoga in addressing global tensions. “Even in conflicts such as the one between Israel and Iran, if solutions are based on human values, restraint, and understanding, yoga can guide the way,” he said.
He urged younger generations to see yoga not merely as physical exercise but as a guiding philosophy for life. “Our society needs a culture of positivity, discipline, and peace,” he said.
Prime Minister Oli’s remarks positioned yoga as a practice that contributes not only to personal well-being but also to international peace and understanding. In times of global instability, he said, yoga can offer a meaningful path toward unity and calm.
