Rabi Lamichhane, Balen Shah and Gagan Thapa shared the stage as the party began a convention expected to shape its future leadership and direction.

The first national convention of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) formally began in Chitwan on Sunday, bringing together leaders from across Nepal’s political spectrum as the party prepares to decide its future direction, strengthen its organization and elect a new leadership team.

The opening session drew attention after Prime Minister Balen Shah, RSP President Rabi Lamichhane and Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa appeared on the same stage. The gathering reflected the importance political parties have attached to RSP’s first national convention since its emergence as a major force in national politics.

Thapa arrived in Chitwan to extend his greetings to the convention. Although the Nepali Congress had initially planned to send Vice-President Pushpa Bhusal, the party later decided that Thapa would attend the event himself. Earlier on Sunday, he also wished the convention success through social media.

Leaders from several other parties were present, including Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden, Janamat Party Chairman Dr. CK Raut and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav.

Security Checks Conducted Before Ceremony

Security arrangements were tightened ahead of the event. Bomb disposal teams from the Nepal Army and Nepal Police inspected the convention venue before the opening session began.

At the convention grounds, RSP leader Dr. Toshima Karki was seen working alongside volunteers at a health help desk set up for delegates and visitors.

Focus on Organization and Leadership

The convention is widely viewed as a crucial moment for the Rastriya Swatantra Party as it seeks to build a stronger organizational structure beyond its electoral success.

Party leaders and delegates are expected to discuss political priorities, organizational expansion and leadership selection during the gathering.

Closed-door sessions and election-related programs are scheduled for Asar 8 and 9, with the outcomes expected to shape the party’s next phase of political growth.
