Case Filed Against Durga Prasai in Parsa
Parsa District Court registered charges after police investigation into Durga Prasai’s public statements, interviews and social media activity.
Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai has been formally charged at the Parsa District Court under cybercrime and anti-state offences after weeks of investigation into his public remarks and social media activity.
The case was filed on Monday by the District Government Attorney’s Office following an investigation led by police after Prasai’s arrest from a hotel in Birgunj on May 18.
Police had been examining a series of public statements, interviews and online content linked to Prasai. Investigators claim some of the material promoted hatred, social hostility and objectionable remarks targeting women, security agencies and public figures.
Case moved ahead after Supreme Court directive
The legal process moved forward after the Supreme Court directed authorities to complete the investigation and proceed under the law without unnecessarily prolonging detention.
A joint bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Nityananda Pandey had instructed police to avoid keeping Prasai in custody for an excessive period while continuing the investigation.
Police later submitted the investigation report to the District Government Attorney’s Office.
District Attorney Manoj Prasad Gupta said the charges were registered under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006 and offences related to crimes against the state.
Statement hearing incomplete
Prasai was produced before the court on Monday, but the hearing on his statement could not be completed within the day. The court ordered that he be kept in custody and brought back again on Tuesday.
Supporters of Prasai were also seen gathered around the court premises during the proceedings.
Police say several of his online statements and public allegations involving political figures and state institutions have also been included within the scope of investigation.
The case has added another layer to the ongoing political and social tensions surrounding Prasai and his recent activities in public life.
