Spain have announced their final 26-member squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with several Barcelona players making the cut while no Real Madrid player has been included in the national team for the first time in World Cup history.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente has largely continued with the core group that won UEFA Euro 2024. A few players returning from injury have also been trusted ahead of the tournament.
All Eyes on Lamine Yamal
Eighteen-year-old forward Lamine Yamal is set to play his first World Cup, though he may miss Spain’s opening matches because of a hamstring injury.
Spain begin their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 14. The team expects Yamal to regain full fitness before the final group-stage match against Uruguay.
Gavi Returns, Fermin Left Out
Midfielder Gavi has returned to the national team after spending a long period out injured. His performances towards the end of the season convinced the coaching staff to bring him back into the squad.
Fermin Lopez, however, has missed out after recently undergoing surgery following a foot fracture.
Nico Williams has also been included despite still recovering from injury.
No Real Madrid Player in Spain Squad
This is the first time Spain will enter a World Cup without a single Real Madrid player in the squad.
The situation emerged after defender Dean Huijsen was left out of the final list, triggering widespread discussion in Spanish football circles.
Spain’s Group and Warm-Up Matches
Spain have been placed in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Before the World Cup, Spain will play friendly matches against Iraq on June 4 and Peru on June 8.
