Germany: Six died in Stade Shooting
Police say the attack at a family support centre was driven by a personal child custody dispute, with no evidence of a political or terrorist motive.
Germany is mourning after six people were killed in a shooting at a family support centre in the northern city of Stade on Monday. Investigators say the attack appears to have stemmed from a personal dispute over custody and visitation rights involving a three-month-old child, with no indication so far of any political or ideological motive.
The incident has drawn national attention not only because of the number of lives lost but because it unfolded inside a place established to protect and support vulnerable parents and young children.
Employees of Family Shelter Among the Dead
Police said all six victims worked at a temporary accommodation centre that provides shelter and assistance to parents and their young children. The victims included four women and two men.
Several other people were injured, although authorities have not disclosed how many.
A 45-year-old German national has been taken into custody as the main suspect. Police believe he had arrived at the centre for a scheduled visit related to his three-month-old daughter before opening fire.
The infant and her mother were not harmed.
Suspect Arrested While Trying to Leave the Scene
According to investigators, the suspect was arrested while attempting to flee in a car driven by a woman. Police believe she may be a relative or someone known to him, though her exact connection remains under investigation.
Authorities said a formal arrest warrant against the suspect will be decided as the investigation progresses.
The investigation so far points to a violent escalation of a private family conflict rather than a broader public security threat.
No Political or Terror Motive, Police Say
Police have ruled out political, religious or financial motives based on the evidence collected so far.
Investigators say the shooting appears to have been driven entirely by a personal family dispute.
Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens described the attack as an “extremely brutal act of violence” and expressed condolences to the families of those killed.
Children Nearby Remained Safe
The shooting took place close to a daycare centre and a primary school.
Local authorities confirmed that all children and staff at those facilities were safe throughout the incident.
A large police contingent, ambulances and emergency response teams were deployed after the shooting. Although the area was temporarily sealed off, police later confirmed there was no continuing danger to the public and urged residents not to rely on unverified claims circulating on social media.
Germany’s Leaders Express Condolences
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it was deeply distressing that such violence had occurred in a place intended to provide safety and protection.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz also described the shooting as heartbreaking and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Germany has some of Europe’s strictest firearm laws, yet fatal mass shootings still occur on rare occasions. The Stade attack is already being regarded as one of the country’s deadliest such incidents in recent years.
