Colombia made a confident start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 in their Group K opener at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Coming into the tournament with high expectations after finishing runners-up in the Copa America, Colombia looked composed from the outset. They controlled possession, dictated the pace of the match and repeatedly pushed Uzbekistan onto the back foot during the opening half.
The breakthrough arrived just before the interval. In the 41st minute, Daniel Munoz finished off a well-worked move after being picked out by Luis Diaz, giving Colombia a deserved lead.
While the result ultimately reflected Colombia’s experience on the global stage, Uzbekistan showed enough quality to suggest they could still trouble opponents later in the group phase.
Historic Moment for Uzbekistan
Playing in their first-ever World Cup, Uzbekistan responded positively after the break and produced a moment that will remain part of the country’s football history.
Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored with a header in the 60th minute, becoming the first Uzbek player to find the net at a FIFA World Cup. The goal levelled the match at 1-1 and briefly shifted momentum in Uzbekistan’s favour.
The equaliser sparked belief among the debutants, who began pressing higher up the pitch in search of another breakthrough.
Diaz Leads Colombia’s Response
Colombia regained control only five minutes later.
Luis Diaz, who had already provided the assist for the opening goal, added his name to the scoresheet with a powerful strike that slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands before crossing the line.
The goal restored Colombia’s advantage and settled nerves inside the stadium.
Uzbekistan continued to push forward in pursuit of another equaliser, but Colombia’s defensive line remained organised and limited clear opportunities in the closing stages.
Late Goal Seals the Points
As Uzbekistan committed more players forward, Colombia found space on the counterattack.
Deep into stoppage time, Juan Hernandez delivered a cross that was met by Jaminton Campaz, whose header sealed the victory and ensured Colombia left with all three points.
Uzbekistan created a handful of dangerous moments, including an effort from Karimov that struck the post, but a lack of experience at key moments proved costly.
For Colombia, the opening victory strengthens belief ahead of the remaining group-stage matches and underlines their ambition of making a deep run in the tournament.
