For thousands of Nepali football fans, the excitement of the global football season has been overshadowed by a crisis at home. FIFA has suspended the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), cutting Nepal off from international football until further notice. The decision has immediate consequences for players, clubs, coaches, referees and the country’s long-term football development.
The suspension is not the result of a single dispute. It reflects a prolonged institutional conflict involving ANFA, the National Sports Council (NSC), the courts and competing factions within football administration. At the heart of FIFA’s decision is what it considers third-party interference in the governance of Nepal’s football body, a direct violation of its statutes.
Football has often survived political instability in Nepal, but this time the institutions responsible for protecting the game have become part of the problem. While officials continued their legal and administrative battles, the biggest price is now being paid by players who had no role in creating the crisis.
Why FIFA Suspended ANFA
FIFA cited violations of Article 14 of its statutes, which requires member football associations to remain independent from government, judicial and political interference.
Three developments led to the suspension.
- The National Sports Council suspended the ANFA executive committee for three months after accusing it of serious financial irregularities. Although that suspension was later withdrawn, investigations against ANFA President Pankaj Bikram Nembang and General Secretary Kiran Rai, along with restrictions on foreign travel, remained in place. FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) viewed these actions as direct government interference in football administration.
- ANFA’s executive committee had already completed its legal term. The association scheduled its general assembly and elections in Jhapa on February 11, 2026, but rival factions within ANFA and the National Sports Council refused to recognize the electoral process. The dispute eventually reached the Patan High Court, which issued an interim order preventing the election from moving forward.
- FIFA and the AFC repeatedly warned Nepal to reverse the disputed decisions and restore ANFA’s operational independence. After several extensions, a joint letter issued on June 5, 2026 gave Nepal until June 11 to provide written confirmation that the required corrective measures had been implemented. FIFA concluded that the conditions had not been met.
On June 24, 2026, the FIFA Council Bureau meeting in Zurich unanimously decided to suspend ANFA’s membership with immediate effect until further notice.
The Biggest Losers Are Nepal’s Players
The immediate impact of FIFA’s suspension will be felt by the people who had nothing to do with the dispute — Nepal’s footballers.
Until the suspension is lifted, Nepal’s men’s and women’s national teams, along with domestic clubs, will not be allowed to participate in FIFA and AFC competitions, including international qualifiers, regional championships and other official tournaments.
For many players who have spent years working toward the opportunity to represent Nepal on the international stage, that dream has suddenly been put on hold. If the suspension continues, many could see their careers disrupted, while others may be forced to look beyond Nepal in search of competitive opportunities.
The damage extends well beyond the pitch.
Financial and technical support from FIFA and the AFC for grassroots football, coach education, referee development and football infrastructure will remain suspended for as long as the ban is in place. That setback is expected to slow the growth of domestic football at every level.
Nepal also stands to lose its place in the international football community. The country will be unable to take part in official FIFA and AFC programmes, arrange sanctioned international matches or compete on the global stage until the suspension is lifted.
What began as an administrative dispute has now become a crisis for an entire footballing nation, with players and the future of Nepali football paying the highest price.
What Must Happen Before the Ban Can Be Lifted
Nepal must fully satisfy FIFA’s conditions before the suspension can be removed.
That requires government agencies, the courts and the National Sports Council to withdraw from ANFA’s internal administrative affairs. The disputed government actions against ANFA must be reversed, and a free, fair and independent election should be conducted under the supervision of FIFA and the AFC.
Only after football governance is restored in line with FIFA statutes is the suspension expected to be reconsidered.
