Nepali Congress leader Purna Bahadur Khadka has announced that he will not contest the upcoming House of Representatives election. In a statement posted on Facebook, Khadka said that because he has gone to court against the party’s special general convention, running as a candidate at this time would go against his political values, principles, and ethical position.

Khadka said that on Magh 4, 2082 BS, he personally filed a case at the Supreme Court seeking justice against a decision made by the Election Commission on Magh 2, 2082 BS related to the Nepali Congress.

He said the decision violated the Constitution, the Political Parties Act, and the party’s statute. He also maintained that the working committee elected through the special general convention is automatically illegitimate.

“Since I have challenged this decision in court and have maintained that the working committee elected through the illegal special general convention is itself illegitimate, contesting the House of Representatives election using a ticket issued through their decision and signature would be contrary to the political values and ethical principles I have upheld throughout my life,” Khadka said.

Apology to Supporters and Appeal for Party Unity

He said that despite the love, trust, and confidence he has received from party colleagues and voters, he has decided not to run in the House of Representatives election this time. Khadka said he understands that his decision may hurt the feelings of party workers and the general electorate and expressed his apology to all concerned.

In his final remarks, he urged party members to stand united behind the official Nepali Congress candidate who receives the party’s election symbol and to take part actively in the campaign to ensure the candidate’s victory by a decisive margin.
