Nepal MP Mahindra Rai Yadav Calls for Education System Free from Politics

Kathmandu — CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Mahindra Rai Yadav has underlined the importance of keeping Nepal’s education system free from political influence, calling it a key step toward improving quality and ensuring equality.

Speaking at a meeting of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee in Singha Durbar on Thursday, Yadav said education should align with Nepal’s constitutional goal of a socialist-oriented society. He argued that education policies must prioritize equality rather than moving toward privatization and profit-making models.

Yadav highlighted that provisions such as full scholarships for poor and underprivileged students must remain intact. “If we continue drafting laws with the old mindset, it will only create imbalance in society. Education must help build an equal society, not deepen divisions,” he said.

He also questioned why the federal government continues to control the appointment of education board members even as provinces take greater responsibility, including conducting the Secondary Education Examination (SEE).

Yadav further urged lawmakers to draft the bill in a way that raises the quality of education. “Education has become overly politicized. This must end. Administrative staff can manage appointments, but political interference in schools and universities should stop,” he emphasized.
