What Is MoFA Mitra App and How to Use It?

Nepal has launched the MoFA Mitra app to help citizens abroad file complaints, seek rescue support, track cases, and connect with embassies through a single digital platform.

Nepal has launched a new mobile application called “MoFA Mitra” aimed at helping Nepali citizens living abroad access government support directly from their phones. The app comes at a time when cases involving foreign employment fraud, stranded migrant workers, delayed rescue efforts, and difficulties in bringing back bodies of deceased Nepalis from overseas continue to surface regularly.

For months, Khoj Samachar had been raising concerns over the lack of a proper digital grievance and emergency support system for Nepalis abroad. Through reports, videos, and public campaigns, the newsroom repeatedly pushed for a centralized system where migrant workers and their families could directly file complaints and seek help.

Earlier, Khoj Samachar had also launched a public reporting campaign against foreign job fraud and opened a digital complaint system for victims of manpower scams. Related reports can be read here:

Now, with the government officially launching the “MoFA Mitra” app, the move is being seen as Nepal’s first major digital step toward centralized migrant support and grievance handling.

What Services Are Available Inside the App?

According to the government, the app currently includes eight major services. Nepalis abroad can file requests related to missing persons, rescue operations, emergency support, and stranded workers directly through the application.

The app also allows users to begin procedures related to the management and repatriation of dead bodies of Nepali citizens who die abroad. Insurance and compensation-related complaints can also be submitted through the same system.

Foreign employment complaints, manpower-related disputes, and migrant grievances are also included within the platform. Users can track the status of their complaints from inside the app itself.

Contact details of Nepali embassies and missions in different countries, including phone numbers, email addresses, and office locations, have also been integrated into the app.

There is also a question-and-answer section explaining what to do if a Nepali citizen is stranded abroad, jailed overseas, or dies in another country. A travel advisory section has also been added for country-specific precautions and guidance.

How to Download and Use MoFA Mitra App

Users first need to open Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search for “MoFA Mitra.” After downloading the application, users must enter their passport number and date of birth in English to access services.

The system then verifies the passport details and automatically displays the user’s name and gender. After that, users must fill in their permanent address in Nepal, including province, district, municipality or rural municipality, and ward number.

Clicking “Next” opens another page where users need to select the country they are currently living in. Once the country is selected, the system automatically suggests the relevant Nepali embassy or support center. Users can also manually select the nearest embassy if needed.

The app then asks users to enter the date they traveled abroad and the reason for going overseas. Options include employment, study, tourism, and other categories.

How Complaints Can Be Filed

In the next step, users must provide the address of their company or their current residence abroad. Additional details such as company name, company phone number, company identification number, and emergency contact numbers can also be added if available.

The app then asks whether the complaint is being filed by the victim personally or by someone else on their behalf. If the user selects “Self,” the system automatically fills several details.

If someone is filing the complaint for another person, they must provide the victim’s details, relationship, address, and phone number.

The final section requires users to explain their problem in detail. Passport photographs, photos of the affected person, and supporting evidence documents can then be uploaded before submitting the complaint officially into the government system.

Users Can Track Complaint Status

The app also includes a complaint tracking feature. Users need to open the “Application Status” section from the home screen, enter their passport number, select the embassy or service center they previously chose, and press “Search.”

The system then displays updates regarding whether the complaint has been reviewed, processed, or forwarded for action.

Digital Migrant Support Had Been Demanded For Months

The launch of the app comes after months of public pressure around migrant safety, manpower fraud, rescue coordination, and government accountability in foreign employment cases. Khoj Samachar had repeatedly argued that Nepal needed a centralized digital support mechanism for citizens abroad instead of scattered bureaucratic processes.

The newsroom had documented complaints involving manpower scams, stranded migrant workers, delayed embassy response, and families struggling to bring bodies back from overseas. It had also called for systems such as public manpower ratings and faster digital complaint handling.

With the launch of MoFA Mitra, the government now appears to have formally entered that digital migrant support space.

Technical Issues Already Reported

Although the app has only recently launched, some users have already pointed out technical problems. iPhone users in particular reported issues where the mobile keyboard could not be closed properly after opening, making it difficult to fill forms located at the bottom section of the app.

The expectation now is whether the Foreign Ministry and Labour Ministry will create a fast and effective response mechanism to handle the complaints arriving through the application. The app itself is also expected to receive updates and additional services in the coming months.
