Kathmandu — While many aspects of the government’s recently announced 100-point agenda appear promising, a critical and urgent issue has been left unaddressed.
This issue needs to reach the government and concerned authorities without delay. Citizens are being encouraged to widely share this message across social platforms to ensure it gains national attention.
Remittance Powers the Economy, But Fraud Remains Widespread
It is widely known that remittance forms a major pillar of Nepal’s economy. Today, in almost every district, every village, and nearly every household, at least one person is working abroad.
However, except for rare cases, most of those who go abroad have faced some form of fraud at least once. Just as corruption is often described as one of the country’s biggest problems, for migrant workers, the biggest challenge is being deceived by manpower agencies and agents.
This fraud is not limited to thousands or millions — it operates at the scale of billions. Citizens who are forced to leave the country to support their families are being exploited by certain manpower companies, agents, and intermediaries in ways that are difficult to fully measure or describe.
More than 1,000 pieces of evidence and complaints related to such cases are currently documented and held by Khoj Samachar.
Clear Demand: Strong Task Force and Rapid Response System
There is an urgent need for the government to establish a powerful team to listen to and investigate complaints related to foreign employment fraud, as well as a rapid response force to rescue citizens stranded abroad.
System Failure Both Inside and Outside the Country
At present, if an individual is defrauded while attempting to go abroad, calls to the Department of Foreign Employment often go unanswered, and emails receive no response.
Even when complaints are formally registered by visiting offices in person, cases rarely move forward. In some instances, even after courts issue arrest warrants, the accused are not apprehended.
This reflects the situation within the country.
For those already abroad facing similar problems or stranded situations, contacting Nepali embassies often leads to the same outcome — calls are not answered and emails remain unanswered.
In effect, whether inside the country or abroad, the situation remains the same.
Digital Complaint System Reveals Scale of the Crisis
On March 25, 2026, Khoj Samachar launched a digital complaint system aimed at helping victims of foreign employment fraud.
Report foreign job fraud through the digital system
Within just one week, 220 individuals had already generated digital complaints through the platform. These complaints were sent via email to the police, the Department of Foreign Employment, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and Khoj Samachar.
Potential Impact of a Government-Led System
If a similar digital system were implemented by the government — where complaints are verified and immediate action is taken — the number of cases registered daily could reach thousands.
Such a system could significantly improve accountability and help recover large amounts of money lost to fraudulent networks.
Call for Immediate Government Action
If necessary, the Khoj Samachar team has stated that it is ready to provide any form of support — whether financial, technical, or logistical — to help implement such a system. However, the priority is that this must be implemented without delay.
This would require:
- A dedicated team to receive complaints
- A separate unit to verify complaints
- A rapid-response team to take action on verified cases
- A specialized mechanism to handle investigations and legal proceedings efficiently
Millions Could Benefit from Immediate Reform
If such a system is properly implemented, an estimated 4 to 5 million citizens could receive justice. Additionally, it is believed that between 10 to 20 billion rupees could be recovered from fraudulent actors.
Public Call to Raise the Issue
Citizens are being urged to raise this issue across social media platforms, share it with friends, community groups, and political representatives, and ensure it reaches decision-makers.
Even those who have not yet faced fraud may encounter it in the future, either directly or through someone close to them.
This is being described as a critical moment to take action and hold fraudulent networks accountable.
