Nepal May Have Taken Indian Land Too: PM Balen
Prime Minister Balendra Shah says Nepal has received replies to diplomatic notes sent over the disputed border region and trade route concerns.
The long-running dispute over Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura has returned to the centre of national attention after Prime Minister Balendra Shah informed Parliament that Nepal has already sent diplomatic notes to both India and China regarding the issue and received responses from both countries.
Speaking in the House of Representatives, Shah said Nepal had formally raised concerns through diplomatic channels over matters connected to its territory, including the trade route being operated between India and China through the Lipulekh area. He said the government has communicated Nepal’s position to the two neighbouring countries and is continuing diplomatic engagement on the matter.
The statement comes at a time when questions surrounding Nepal’s western border remain politically sensitive and closely watched by both Parliament and the public.
Prime Minister Raises Another Border Question
During his remarks, Shah also made an unexpected observation about the broader border issue.
He said he had recently received information suggesting that Nepal may also have encroached upon some Indian territory, indicating that the border dispute should not be viewed from only one side.
The Prime Minister did not identify the location involved or provide further details. His comments nevertheless introduced a new dimension to a debate that has largely focused on Nepal’s claims regarding disputed border areas.
Government Looking Toward Dialogue
Shah said the government is considering a process that would bring together historians, diplomats and relevant experts from both countries to help address the dispute through dialogue.
According to him, any durable solution must be based on historical records, maps and established facts rather than political rhetoric alone.
He also said further study is being carried out on the historical aspects of border determination and noted that the matter has been raised with the British government as part of efforts to examine historical documentation linked to the dispute.
A Continuing National Issue
For years, Nepal has maintained its claim over the Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura region. The issue has repeatedly shaped political discourse, parliamentary debate and diplomatic relations with India.
The latest remarks from the Prime Minister suggest the government is attempting to move the discussion beyond public statements and into formal diplomatic and historical processes. Whether that approach produces progress remains to be seen, but the issue is once again firmly on the national agenda.
