Rekha Kumari Sharma Arrested in Child Abuse Case
Police detain Lumbini Province lawmaker after probe into alleged abuse of a minor domestic worker
Lumbini Province Assembly member Rekha Kumari Sharma has been arrested in Kathmandu over allegations of abusing a minor domestic worker, bringing renewed attention to a case that has remained under scrutiny for months.
Arrest Made After Months of Investigation
A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office detained Sharma from her residence in Dhumbarahi late at night. The action follows an earlier complaint related to a minor girl from Dang who had been living and working at Sharma’s home. The case was officially registered at the Kathmandu District Police Office in june 2024 under Nepal’s child protection laws.
Allegations of Abuse and Legal Provisions
Authorities allege that Sharma physically assaulted the minor, restricted her freedom of movement, and failed to provide proper living conditions. Under the Child Act 2018, such actions are considered violence against children. If the charges are proven, the law provides for a fine of up to Rs 50,000 and a prison sentence of up to one year.
Court Proceedings and Child Welfare Focus
The case also reached the Supreme Court, where judges examined the legality of the minor’s rescue and her care arrangements. The court emphasized the child’s best interest, ruling that while the rescue was lawful, the child should be reunited with her parents without disrupting her education. Authorities were instructed to ensure her continued schooling and well-being in Kathmandu, based on her own preference.
Background, Controversy, and Ongoing Case
The situation had earlier sparked public debate over delays in legal action. The court noted that the child had been sent to the city for education due to economic hardship, not abandonment. The Rekha Kumari Sharma arrest is now expected to push the case forward, raising broader questions about child protection enforcement and accountability as investigations continue.
