CPN-UML Makwanpur District Committee Chairman Shridhar Pokharel has resigned from his position after the party suffered defeat in both parliamentary constituencies of Makwanpur in the House of Representatives election, taking responsibility for the result.
Calls for Internal Review and Accountability
In his statement, Pokharel said the party must conduct a serious review to determine the reasons behind the result. He stated that after the party’s 45-year political journey from CPN-ML to CPN-UML, the outcome requires careful evaluation.
According to him, the problems cannot be solved through vague expressions or attitudes driven by jealousy and arrogance. Pokharel said leaders from the local level to the central leadership should conduct self-assessment and accept their responsibilities.
He also said party leaders, including the chairman and the general secretary, should be prepared to accept accountability and carry out self-review if necessary.
Pokharel Announces Resignation From District Leadership
Pokharel stated that if necessary, leaders should step down from their positions to create space for organizational reform and rebuilding of the party. “If the party is to remain alive and strong in the future, this reality must be accepted and responsibility must be taken,” he said while announcing his resignation from the district chairman position effective immediately.
He also said he would continue to support the party and assist the younger generation of leaders in the future. Pokharel was elected chairman of the CPN-UML Makwanpur District Committee during the district convention held in Jestha 2081.
He had earlier joined the Unified Socialist Party before later returning to the CPN-UML.
