Thalapathy Vijay is moving closer to power in Tamil Nadu after his party emerged as the largest force in the state assembly election and began efforts to form a coalition government.

Days after the election results produced a fractured mandate, the actor-turned-politician has intensified talks with regional and left-leaning parties to secure the numbers needed to take office.

The political developments have placed Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam party at the center of state politics. Vijay contested from two constituencies and won both seats. Under election rules, he will eventually vacate one seat, reducing his party’s strength in the assembly from 108 to 107 members.

With one seat expected to become vacant, the effective strength of the assembly will stand at 233. In that situation, at least 117 members are needed to establish a majority and form the government.

The close arithmetic has led to intense political negotiations among parties over the past several days.

Congress and Left Parties Extend Support

The breakthrough for Vijay came after Congress, the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) announced their backing for the TVK-led government effort.

Congress holds five seats in the assembly, while the two left parties also have representation in the house. Their support has taken the number of legislators backing Vijay to 116, placing the coalition just one seat away from the majority mark.

The political support has significantly strengthened Vijay’s claim to power and reduced uncertainty over government formation in the state.

Leaders from the supporting parties described their decision as an effort to ensure a stable and democratically elected administration in Tamil Nadu.

Push for Additional Support Continues

Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which holds two seats in the assembly. If the party decides to support the TVK alliance, Vijay’s coalition would comfortably cross the majority threshold.

Senior leaders from the supporting parties publicly defended their decision to back the TVK-led coalition.

CPI leader D. Raja said the support was aimed at helping establish a secular government in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader K. Balakrishnan stated that giving the largest party an opportunity to form the government was part of the democratic process.

He also said the state should avoid any possibility of governance through central intervention or prolonged uncertainty and stressed that people’s representatives should be allowed to form the administration.

The statements from left leaders have added political legitimacy to the coalition-building exercise and strengthened pressure for an early resolution.

Legal and Political Pressure Builds Around Government Formation

The delay in inviting Vijay to form the government has also reached the legal arena. A petition has reportedly been filed in India’s Supreme Court seeking directions to the governor to invite the TVK leader to establish the government.

At the same time, former Chief Minister and DMK chief M.K. Stalin has also urged the governor not to delay the constitutional process.

Stalin stated that elected representatives should be sworn in and that the formation of a new government is a fundamental democratic responsibility after the conclusion of elections.
