A strong earthquake struck northern Chile on Monday, shaking several regions across the country’s desert belt. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths or major destruction, while officials confirmed that there was no tsunami threat following the quake.

The United States Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.9. The epicentre was located in the Atacama Desert region, around 31 kilometres from the city of Calama and nearly 100 kilometres below the surface.

The tremor was felt across multiple northern regions, including Arica, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Atacama. Local television footage showed goods falling from shelves in some shops as people rushed outdoors after the shaking began.

Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service said no serious injuries or large-scale damage had been officially reported by Monday evening.

One of the World’s Most Earthquake-Prone Countries

Chile lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, one of the most active seismic zones in the world. The country regularly experiences earthquakes due to the movement and collision of tectonic plates beneath the Pacific coast.

The Nazca Plate, South American Plate and Antarctic Plate continuously interact in the region, creating frequent seismic activity across the country.

Chile has witnessed some of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.

In 1960, the southern city of Valdivia was hit by a massive 9.5 magnitude earthquake, still considered the most powerful earthquake in recorded history. The disaster triggered a devastating tsunami that killed thousands of people.

Another major earthquake measuring 8.8 magnitude struck central Chile in 2010, followed by a tsunami that left more than 500 people dead.
