Russia has accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack targeting the official residence of President Vladimir Putin. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine launched the drone attack at President Putin’s government residence located in Russia’s northwestern Novgorod region.
According to Lavrov, a total of 91 drones were deployed overnight on Sunday in what Russia claims was an attempt to strike the presidential residence. The incident has prompted Russia to warn that it may reconsider its position in ongoing peace negotiations, according to a report by the BBC.
In a statement issued via Telegram, Lavrov claimed that all drones heading toward the residence were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems. He also said the attack caused no human casualties or material damage.
Lavrov accused Ukraine of pursuing what he described as a policy of “state terrorism” and warned that Russia’s stance in peace talks could be reviewed as a result. However, he added that Russia would continue its dialogue with the United States despite the incident.
Russian authorities have not disclosed where President Putin was at the time of the alleged drone attack. The incident has also drawn attention from U.S. President Donald Trump. After a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, reporters asked Trump about Russia’s claim that Ukraine targeted Putin’s residence with drones.
In response, Trump said he had also received information about the incident. According to international news agency Reuters, Trump said President Putin personally called him to inform him about the attack. “Do you know who told me about it? Putin did. He called me and said he was attacked,” Trump told reporters.
Trump said such attacks were inappropriate and ill-timed. “This is not the right time for such actions. I heard this directly from President Putin, and it made me very angry,” Trump said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, rejected Russia’s allegations.
Zelenskyy accused the Kremlin of using the incident as a pretext to sabotage peace talks and justify continued attacks on Ukraine. “The world should not remain silent at this moment. Russia must not be allowed to undermine efforts to establish lasting peace,” he said.
The developments came shortly after high-level talks between the United States and Ukraine were held in Florida. During the meeting, U.S. President Trump and President Zelenskyy discussed a revised peace plan aimed at ending the war.
Following the talks, Zelenskyy said there was a possibility the war could end by 2026, but he made it clear that Ukraine would not be able to win the war without U.S. support. In an interview with Fox News, Zelenskyy said President Trump appeared ready to impose tougher economic and sanction-based measures against Russia, which he said could help accelerate the peace process.
However, Zelenskyy reiterated that he does not trust President Putin and said Russia does not appear genuinely interested in peace. According to Zelenskyy, the United States has proposed a 15-year security guarantee for Ukraine, and about 95 percent of the agreement has already been finalized.
He said key unresolved issues include territorial disputes and the future of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control. There has also been little progress on the status of the Donbas region.
At present, Russia controls approximately 75 percent of Ukraine’s Donetsk region and nearly 99 percent of the neighboring Luhansk region. Together, these areas are known as Donbas, which Russia seeks to bring fully under its control.
