Lokesh Bam’s Rise in Nepali Cricket: From Domestic Breakthrough to International Challenge

Lokesh Bam has steadily built his reputation in Nepali cricket through domestic performances and international appearances, emerging as a versatile and aggressive batter.

From time to time, Nepali cricket produces players who rise quietly but earn recognition through performance rather than publicity. Lokesh Bam is one such player. Known for his aggressive batting, composure under pressure, and versatility, Bam has steadily built his reputation in domestic and international cricket.

Bam first drew national attention at the age of 17 during the Pokhara Premier League, where he scored a half-century against a team featuring former international captains. The innings marked a key moment in his career and positioned him as a promising prospect in Nepali cricket.

Early Life and Inspiration

Born in Doti and raised in Dhangadhi, Kailali, Bam grew up playing cricket with a tennis ball. He did not initially view cricket as a professional career option. That changed after the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup, when Nepal’s participation inspired him to pursue the sport seriously.

His decision was not immediately supported at home, as his father encouraged him to focus on his studies. With support from his mother, Bam enrolled at the Dhangadhi Cricket Academy. He began as a bowler, but on the advice of local coaches, he shifted his focus to batting.

Bam’s development accelerated after a tour of India with a local team from Dhangadhi. He scored a century in a match in Mumbai, a performance that helped him earn selection in Nepal’s Under-19 national team through a talent hunt held in Kathmandu.

Domestic Breakthrough and Franchise Cricket

He made his franchise cricket debut in the Pokhara Premier League with Biratnagar Titans. Competing against experienced players such as Paras Khadka, Rohan Mustafa, and Babar Hayat, Bam’s confident batting performances stood out and established him as a reliable domestic cricketer.

Later, representing Tribhuvan Army Club, Bam delivered several notable performances. One of the highlights came during the Prime Minister Cup, where he scored a half-century off just 14 balls, hitting seven sixes and two fours, underlining his attacking style.

International Career and Future Outlook

Bam made his T20 International debut for Nepal against the United Arab Emirates in 2022. However, he has yet to secure a regular place in the national side. Despite limited opportunities, he has delivered impactful performances in ICC World Cup qualifiers and in both editions of the Nepal Premier League.

He has shown the ability to adapt to multiple roles, contributing both as an opening batter and as a finisher. His additional capability as a wicketkeeping option adds to his value for the team.

At 25, Lokesh Bam remains in the process of establishing himself at the international level. He is yet to make his One Day International debut, and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 presents both an opportunity and a challenge.

From playing informal cricket in his childhood to representing Nepal on the international stage, Bam’s journey reflects persistence, discipline, and consistent effort. His progress so far highlights significant potential, with future success dependent on sustained performance and continued opportunities at the highest level.
