Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, and Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak are set to appear before the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday following their arrest on Saturday morning, police said.
Police said both were detained under an arrest warrant as part of an ongoing investigation. Under Nepali law, those arrested must be presented before a court within 24 hours. The arrests are linked to an incident on Bhadra 23 during a Gen-Z protest, in which a person died.
Authorities have accused the two leaders of negligence in connection with the death. A government-formed investigation commission led by Gauribahadur Karki concluded that Oli and Lekhak were responsible for the incident and recommended legal action, including possible prison sentences ranging from three to ten years.
Based on the commission’s findings, police carried out the arrests on Saturday. Following his detention, Oli experienced health complications and was admitted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Lekhak is currently being held at a police facility. The case has drawn political attention, and further legal proceedings are expected.
