Kathmandu — The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) staged protests across the country on Saturday following the arrest of its chairman and former prime minister, K. P. Sharma Oli.
Earlier, activists affiliated with 23 UML-linked organizations had gathered at Maitighar Mandala, chanting slogans against the government and demanding Oli’s release. Protesters also burned tires and damaged some private vehicles as tensions escalated.
Authorities confirmed that four individuals, including Raju Tiwari, Bimal Dhamala, and Jagaraj Shahi, were arrested during the protests. CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet criticized the use of force and called for the immediate release of Oli. He also urged the government to act responsibly to prevent further escalation.
The protests come amid rising political tensions following Oli’s arrest, with the party indicating that additional demonstrations may follow.

In Kathmandu, demonstrations intensified in the Maitighar area before a group of protesters moved toward the southern gate of Singha Durbar, a restricted government complex. Police intervened to prevent entry, leading to clashes.
Police said some demonstrators attempted to break barricades and threw stones near the Singha Durbar south gate, prompting security forces to use batons to disperse the crowd. Several individuals, including party members, were injured.
During the confrontation, UML supporter Yubaraj Oli sustained a head injury after being struck by a police baton. He was taken to Annapurna Neuro Hospital, where he received treatment, including stitches, according to party officials.
