Iran’s alleged use of a Chinese spy satellite to target US military structures has triggered fresh geopolitical tensions, with implications for China’s global standing. The claims, reported by Financial Times, suggest deeper foreign involvement in the Middle East conflict.
According to the report, Iran secretly obtained a Chinese-built surveillance satellite, which it used to identify and monitor American military sites before launching drone and missile attacks.
Leaked Documents Detail Satellite Use
Citing leaked Iranian military documents, the report states that the satellite—launched by China in late 2024—was later handed over to Iranian forces. The system reportedly provided time-stamped coordinates, orbital data, and high-resolution imagery.
These capabilities allowed Iran to track key US military locations across the Gulf region, capturing images both before and after attacks carried out in March.
China Faces Diplomatic Pressure
The revelation could place China in a difficult diplomatic position. As a major trading partner and the largest buyer of oil from Gulf nations, Beijing has long maintained a delicate balance in the region.
Any confirmed military involvement risks straining its relations not only with the United States but also with Middle Eastern allies.
US Concerns Over Foreign Military Support
The United States has previously suggested that Russia may have provided intelligence support to Iran. This new development indicates that China may also have played a role in enhancing Iran’s strike capabilities.
Recent reports had already pointed to Iran conducting unusually precise attacks on US-linked targets, raising suspicions about external intelligence assistance.
Trump Warns China Over Military Aid
Just days earlier, US President Donald Trump warned China against supplying weapons to Iran. Speaking to reporters, Trump said any such move would lead to “serious consequences” for Beijing.
The warning came after media reports, citing US intelligence, claimed China was preparing to send air defense systems, including shoulder-fired missiles, to Iran.
Growing Global Security Concerns
When questioned by CNN, Trump reiterated his stance, signaling rising alarm in Washington over China’s potential military involvement. If confirmed, the use of a Chinese spy satellite in active conflict operations would mark a significant escalation, deepening global concerns over great-power rivalry playing out in regional wars.
