Dol Prasad Aryal has been elected Speaker unopposed, marking a dramatic rise from migrant worker to one of Nepal’s most powerful constitutional roles within a short political career.

Uncontested election reflects political balance

The House of Representatives formally announced Aryal’s unopposed election during Sunday’s session after he emerged as the sole candidate for the post. With no competing nominations from opposition parties, his path to the Speaker’s chairman was cleared early, reflecting both political consensus and the current parliamentary balance.

Aryal’s elevation comes amid a strong parliamentary presence of his party, which holds a dominant position in the lower house. In recent parliamentary history, the Speaker has often been chosen without contest, but this time the outcome was shaped more by political arithmetic than broad inter-party agreement.

His appointment places him at the center of Nepal’s legislative process at a time when institutional credibility and neutrality are under close public scrutiny.

From worker to national leadership

What makes Aryal’s journey notable is the speed of his political ascent. Having entered politics only a few years ago, he rose through party ranks as a founding central member and later a key leader known for his calm and balanced approach.

Within just over three years of active political involvement, he has now reached one of the highest constitutional offices in the country. Before entering politics, Aryal built his career through years of struggle and entrepreneurship.

Originally from Dhading, he moved to Kathmandu in the early 2047 BS in search of work, starting in the restaurant sector. He later expanded into tourism, working as a guide, before traveling to Japan to pursue further experience. After returning to Nepal, he became involved in education, remittance services, and business ventures, gradually establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur.

Neutrality test ahead for Aryal

His political journey began alongside the formation of a new political force, where he played a bridging role between the party and other stakeholders. He also briefly served as Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security in two short stints, gaining initial experience in government despite limited time in office.

In the latest parliamentary election, Aryal won from Kathmandu-9 by a margin of nearly 30,000 votes, strengthening his political standing. He had aimed to become Home Minister in the current government, a move also backed by party leadership, and a proposal had been presented to the prime minister.

As Speaker, however, Aryal is now required to step away from active party roles and maintain strict neutrality, a constitutional expectation designed to preserve the balance between legislature, executive, and judiciary.

Previous Speakers have faced criticism over perceived political bias, making impartiality a key test for his tenure. Going forward, DP Aryal’s performance as Speaker will be closely watched, particularly how he upholds neutrality and strengthens parliamentary credibility in a politically sensitive environment.
