CPN-UML Leader Surendra Pandey Warns of Electoral Decline Without Reform

Surendra Pandey says CPN-UML’s electoral strength may weaken further if the party fails to address internal weaknesses and reform its leadership approach.

Butwal — CPN-UML leader Surendra Pandey has warned that the party’s representation in future elections could decline significantly if internal weaknesses are not addressed.

Speaking at a program organized by Chintan Abhiyan Nepal in Butwal on Saturday, Pandey said recent election results show a weakening position not only for UML but also for other traditional political parties.

Referring to past electoral performance, he said UML had secured 174 seats in the 2017 elections but has since failed to maintain that strength. He stated that the party’s representation has gradually decreased over time and warned that it could shrink further in the next election if corrective measures are not taken.

Call for Reform and Leadership Accountability

Pandey said failure to reform leadership style and party operations could lead to a situation where parties struggle to find candidates willing to contest elections. He stressed that leadership must acknowledge weaknesses and take steps to address them.

He added that past mistakes have contributed to the party’s current position and said those issues must be corrected to improve future outcomes. Pandey also said the inability to establish constitutional limits—such as restricting party leaders or prime ministers to two terms—has been a weakness in Nepal’s political system.
