Kathmandu — Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has been appointed Nepal’s Minister for Energy. Shrestha was elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constituency No. 8. He previously served as a member of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly in 2017 under the Bibeksheel Sajha Party and was elected to the federal parliament in the 2022 general elections.
He earlier held the position of Minister for Youth and Sports when the Rastriya Swatantra Party joined the government. He has now been assigned the Energy Ministry.
Shrestha holds a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Business Administration. He was associated with alternative politics led by Ujwal Thapa and was involved in organizational expansion and civic initiatives in Kathmandu.
He also has experience in business and management, including involvement in healthcare and hospitality-related institutions, with roles connected to hospital management and private sector operations. Shrestha is related by marriage to Sharat Singh Bhandari of the Janata Samajbadi Party.
