Arjun Narasingha KC Warns Delay in NC Leader Selection Risks Party Credibility

Nepali Congress faces internal pressure as Arjun Narasingha KC calls for clear criteria and swift decision on parliamentary leader

Arjun Narasingha KC has warned that delays in selecting the Nepali Congress parliamentary leader could undermine the party’s credibility, as internal debate intensifies. The issue carries weight as the party prepares to take on a key opposition role in parliament.

KC, a former joint general secretary and current member of the House of Representatives, stressed the need for clear criteria and swift decision-making to avoid further uncertainty.

Pressure Builds Over Leadership Criteria

The Nepali Congress has announced plans to publish the election schedule on april 15, with voting set for april 17. However, disagreements over how to choose the parliamentary leader have triggered growing concern within party ranks.

KC said that while debate is natural, the party must define “who, why, and what kind of leader” it needs through a transparent standard. He rejected claims that he had caused delays, calling such allegations “misleading and false,” and reiterated his consistent position in favor of consensus-based criteria.

Call for Consensus or Immediate Election

KC emphasized that he would support a unanimous decision if possible, whether the leader is from a younger or more senior generation. He also underlined that lawmakers, regardless of whether they were elected through direct or proportional representation, should not face discrimination.

If consensus fails, he urged the party to proceed immediately with an election based on merit and defined qualifications. “The parliamentary leader is not just a position but a responsibility to play an effective opposition role,” KC noted, warning against prolonged indecision.

Stakes High for Opposition Role

With 38 lawmakers in the House of Representatives, the Nepali Congress is positioned as the main opposition force. The leadership decision is expected to shape how effectively the party challenges the government in the coming months.

Political observers say the delay reflects deeper internal divisions, as factions weigh generational leadership, experience, and political strategy.

Internal Debate Draws Public Attention

The leadership race has not only stirred debate within the party but has also drawn wider public interest. KC acknowledged this attention, calling it “natural,” but stressed the need for a mature and timely resolution.

As the deadline approaches, pressure is mounting on the Nepali Congress to demonstrate unity and decisiveness—qualities seen as essential for maintaining its credibility in national politics.
