Tarique Rahman to Be Sworn In as Bangladesh Prime Minister After BNP Wins Two-Thirds Majority

Tarique Rahman is set to take the oath as Bangladesh Prime Minister after the BNP secured over two-thirds of parliamentary seats in the February 12 election. The swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka will be attended by representatives from 13 countries.

BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister after his party secured more than two-thirds of seats in Bangladesh’s parliamentary election.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Tarique Rahman is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister on Tuesday following his party’s decisive victory in last Thursday’s parliamentary election.

The BNP won more than two-thirds of the seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), securing over 213 seats according to official results. The outcome gives the party a commanding majority and paves the way for Rahman to form the new government.

The February 12 election was held about 18 months after a student-led movement removed the government led by Sheikh Hasina. With the BNP’s victory, Bangladesh is set to begin a new political chapter under Rahman’s leadership.

Foreign Dignitaries Invited; Nepal to Be Represented by Foreign Minister

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Parliament building in Dhaka. Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus has invited representatives from 13 countries to attend the event. The invited nations include Nepal, India, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, the Maldives and Bhutan.

Nepal will be represented by Foreign Minister Balananda Sharma. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit reflects Nepal’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation between the two countries. Senior ministry officials will accompany the foreign minister. Sharma is scheduled to return to Nepal on Falgun 7, according to the Nepali calendar.

Tarique Rahman is the eldest son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He returned to Bangladesh shortly before the election after 17 years abroad. A few days after his return, Khaleda Zia passed away.
