Actress Rekha Thapa has used a social media post to question Nepal’s expanding tax regime, listing a series of taxes affecting education, healthcare, electricity, share trading and ride-sharing services while ending with a pointed remark: “Swarnim Nepal.” The post reflects growing public unease over the cumulative financial burden of taxation rather than focusing on a single policy measure.

Rekha Thapa Lists Multiple Taxes in Critical Facebook Post

On Facebook, Thapa shared what she described as a list of taxes imposed across different sectors before adding the phrase “Swarnim Nepal” alongside a sarcastic emoji, making clear that the remark was intended as irony rather than praise.

The taxes she listed were:

  • 3% education tax
  • 3% health tax
  • 5% VAT on electricity
  • 13% VAT on industrial electricity
  • 5% tax on shared ride services
  • 10% capital gains tax on share trading

Rather than elaborating further, the post relied on the list itself to convey her criticism that government tax policies are placing additional financial pressure on both ordinary citizens and businesses.

Tax Burden Becomes the Focus

By grouping taxes from different sectors into a single post, Thapa shifted attention to their combined effect instead of debating any one policy in isolation. Her use of the phrase “Swarnim Nepal” suggested dissatisfaction with the direction of fiscal policy and served as a satirical comment on the economic realities faced by the public.

Thapa has frequently spoken on political and social issues in addition to her work in Nepal’s film industry. Her latest post is likely to add to wider public discussion over the scope of taxation, its justification and its impact on households and businesses.
