Sweden Honours Narendra Modi With Top State Award
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Sweden’s highest honour for a foreign leader during his visit focused on strategic and economic cooperation.
Sweden has conferred its highest state honour for a foreign head of government on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising his role in deepening ties between India and Sweden and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
The ‘Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross’ was presented to Modi during a special ceremony in Gothenburg by Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden. Established in 1748, the decoration is regarded as Sweden’s most prestigious honour awarded to foreign leaders.
The recognition comes at a time when India and Sweden are pushing to strengthen cooperation in areas ranging from green technology and innovation to defence and artificial intelligence. The visit also reflected the growing importance of Nordic partnerships in India’s broader European strategy.
After receiving the award, Modi described it as an honour not only for himself but for the people of India. In a message shared on X, he said the recognition belonged to India’s 1.4 billion citizens and acknowledged the contribution of those who helped build enduring India-Sweden relations.
Strategic partnership takes centre stage
During his Sweden visit, Modi held bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, where both sides discussed expanding cooperation in defence manufacturing, clean energy transition, supply chains, emerging technologies and climate initiatives.
The discussions also focused on innovation-driven economic collaboration, with both countries seeking stronger partnerships in research, technology and sustainable industrial development.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the honour reaffirmed the strength of India-Sweden friendship and reflected the growing strategic understanding between the two nations.
Modi’s 31st international recognition
The Swedish honour marks Modi’s 31st international award since taking office as India’s prime minister. Over the years, he has received state honours from several countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific region, often tied to India’s expanding diplomatic engagement and geopolitical influence.
The latest recognition also carried cultural symbolism. During the visit, both leaders exchanged special gifts connected to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, highlighting the long-standing intellectual and cultural ties between India and Sweden.
The ceremony in Gothenburg was viewed not only as a diplomatic event but also as a reflection of the increasingly broad partnership between the two democracies at a time of shifting global political and economic alignments.
