BJP Aide Chandranath Rath Shot in West Bengal Incident
Political tensions rise in West Bengal after Chandranath Rath, a close aide to Suvendu Adhikari, was attacked near Kolkata
A senior aide to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot late Wednesday near Kolkata, adding to growing tensions in West Bengal following the recent assembly election results and a series of political clashes across the state.
Chandranath Rath, who served as Adhikari’s personal assistant and close political associate, was attacked while travelling through the Madhyamgram area near the state capital. The incident has triggered strong political reactions from both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress as accusations over post-election violence continue to intensify.
The killing has once again placed the spotlight on West Bengal’s fragile political climate, where confrontations between rival parties have escalated since the election outcome. Security concerns and allegations of politically motivated attacks are now dominating public debate as both sides demand accountability and action from authorities.
Attack Near Kolkata Sparks Fresh Political Tension
Police said Chandranath Rath was critically injured after unidentified attackers opened fire on the vehicle he was travelling in near Madhyamgram on the outskirts of Kolkata. Video footage circulated by news agencies showed him being rushed to hospital in a serious condition following the incident.
Authorities later confirmed that the vehicle used in the attack had been seized. Investigators said the number plate attached to the vehicle was found to be fake, raising further questions about the planning behind the incident.
The car carrying Rath reportedly displayed a legislative assembly pass sticker at the time of the shooting.
State Director General of Police Siddhanath Gupta said bullet shells were recovered from the scene and investigators were collecting statements from eyewitnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Political Background Behind the Incident
The incident comes shortly after the assembly elections in West Bengal, where Suvendu Adhikari defeated Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency by nearly 15,000 votes.
The election result had already deepened political divisions across the state, with both major parties accusing each other of intimidation, violence, and attacks on workers.
The killing of Rath has further intensified those tensions at a time when allegations surrounding post-election unrest remain highly sensitive.
Political observers say the latest incident reflects the continuing rivalry between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, particularly in areas where local political influence remains sharply contested after the elections.
BJP Calls It a Planned Attack
The BJP described the shooting as a “planned killing” and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Suvendu Adhikari claimed that Rath had been under surveillance for several days before the incident took place. He alleged that the situation reflected what he called a breakdown of law and order under the current state administration.
According to Adhikari, senior party leaders were treating the matter seriously and remained in contact with Rath’s family following the attack.
The BJP has denied involvement of its workers in recent incidents of violence and has urged the administration to take firm action to restore order across the state.
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya appealed to party workers to maintain restraint and avoid further escalation.
Trinamool Congress Demands Independent Probe
The Trinamool Congress also condemned the incident and called for an impartial investigation.
In a statement, the party demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry under court supervision to ensure transparency in the case.
At the same time, the ruling party claimed that three of its own workers had also been killed in incidents linked to post-election unrest.
Senior Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee accused BJP supporters of spreading violence across different parts of the state. He alleged that hundreds of party offices had been targeted and that the homes of several candidates were attacked after the election results.
The political exchange between both camps has continued to grow sharper as each side blames the other for destabilising the state.
Who Was Chandranath Rath?
The 41-year-old Chandranath Rath was a resident of the Purba Medinipur district and was widely regarded as one of Suvendu Adhikari’s trusted associates.
He had worked closely with the BJP leader for a long period and was believed to have played an important role in Adhikari’s political rise in West Bengal.
Before entering active political work, Rath reportedly served in the Indian Air Force for nearly two decades. After leaving military service, he spent some time working in the private sector before becoming involved in political coordination and administrative responsibilities.
People familiar with regional politics considered him part of Adhikari’s core team during several major political campaigns, including the Bhabanipur election campaign.
There had also been discussions within political circles that Rath could receive a larger administrative role if Adhikari was given greater responsibilities within the party structure.
Family’s Political Shift Drew Attention
Rath’s family was earlier believed to have had close ties with the Trinamool Congress before later becoming active in BJP politics alongside Adhikari.
That shift in political alignment had attracted attention in local political circles, especially during the recent election campaign period.
His close involvement in strategy discussions and campaign management made him one of the better-known organisational figures around Adhikari, despite staying largely away from public political speeches.
The attack on such a senior aide has now increased concerns among party workers and supporters across different districts.
Questions Raised Over Security Situation
The latest violence has once again raised concerns over the security environment in West Bengal following the elections.
Analysts say political clashes linked to local dominance and control have historically followed major changes in political power within the state. However, they note that the continuation of violent incidents despite the deployment of large security forces has created serious questions about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements.
Some observers warned that failure to control the current tensions could deepen political divisions and lead to a prolonged cycle of retaliation.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has stated that she will not resign from the chief minister’s post despite her party’s election setback. She has accused the BJP of irregularities during the election process.
With investigations continuing into the attack on Chandranath Rath, the incident has become another major flashpoint in West Bengal’s already tense political landscape.
