Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ Asserts Maoists as Nepal’s Leading Political Force Despite Third Place in Parliament

Former Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ claims that despite being third in parliamentary seats, the Maoists remain Nepal’s main political establishment, with Congress and UML positioned as opposition to the current constitution.

Kathmandu — Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has stated that although his party holds the third position in Parliament, ideologically and politically, the Maoists remain Nepal’s principal establishment force. He described the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML as the ‘opposition’ to the current constitution and political system.

In a statement on social media, Prachanda emphasized that the number of parliamentary seats alone should not define the political mainstream. He highlighted the Maoists’ decisive role in establishing the federal democratic republic, protecting secularism, and securing the rights of oppressed communities. Therefore, regardless of the number of seats, the Maoists continue to lead the protection of the constitution and social justice.

“We are the third party in terms of parliamentary numbers, but based on our ideological role and leadership, the Maoists are the institutional face of Nepali politics. Meanwhile, the Congress and UML are not official proponents of this constitution and democracy; they remain the opposition,” Prachanda said.

He also stated that the Maoists have consistently worked to ensure the rights of all marginalized groups, including women, Dalits, indigenous peoples, laborers, farmers, Madhesis, and Muslims.

Through this statement, Prachanda underlined the importance of ideological commitment and leadership over numerical strength in Nepali politics, presenting his party’s role from a renewed perspective.
